Governance

Sustainable Orillia wanted to conduct an organizational revitalization project to ensure its own sustainability and efficiency. KDP Consulting Inc was asked to provide a variety of development services to re-position the organization and chart a new course for their long term success, which included: KDP conducted a comprehensive governance assessment, created a detailed succession plan, and board orientation program. These will provide new members with the knowledge they need to contribute effectively to the governance of Sustainable Orillia. Recognizing the vital role of volunteers, KDP drafted a 12-point plan to help recruit community volunteers. To assist in the elevation of the SO brand a community awareness a plan was also developed. After facilitating two Board planning sessions KDP drafted a forward-looking strategic plan that outlines key priorities and tactics for the next year. This draft plan serves as a roadmap for the SO efforts, ensuring that all activities are aligned with the SO overarching mission and vision.

Founded in 2018, CHTC is a non-profit organization formed through a network of community housing groups. Its goal is to make the community housing sector a primary force in reshaping the housing market in Canada, aiming to increase community housing to 20% by providing funding, tools, and services to stakeholders across the sector. 

The Community Housing Transformation Centre (CHTC) engaged KDP Consulting Inc. to assist in compiling its business and operational plan to support the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan. To carry out the work, KDP conducted an extensive internal document review, clarified the key annual deliverables, and drafted a plan document for the senior executive team.

Strategy

The YMCA of Niagara sought proposals from qualified and experienced consultants to develop a new strategic plan, and KDP Consulting Inc responded. Recognizing the need to adapt to a rapidly changing future, the Board and its Strategic Planning Committee identified the importance of resetting the YMCA’s strategy to reflect a modern, bold vision and reaffirm their commitment across the region.

KDP Consulting facilitated the governance volunteers and senior staff leadership in robust strategy discussions, held over 50 stakeholder interviews, conducted an environmental and regional community scan, and reviewed internal documents and data. By applying KDP’s ‘Adaptive Strategic Planning Model for Nonprofits’ and adhering to a rigorous engagement and delivery schedule, the YMCA of Niagara’s bold new strategic plan sets a compelling path forward to intentionally elevate the YMCA across divers geographic communities and demographic groups.

Our valued, long-time client, ONTABA needed to create a new strategic plan for the period 2025-2027 to respond to the significant membership growth, requests for more professional development programs, and adapt to the increased time and work for the governance volunteers. Over a few short months, KDP Consulting Inc held individual appreciative-inquiry conversations with ONTABA advisors and special interest group representatives, conducted an on-line membership survey, and facilitated two on-line planning sessions with the Board of Directors.

The result was the creation of a robust and ambitious plan that calls for a transformation of the board model, creating a professional operating support structure, a scaling of province-wide education programs, and focusing on government relations and public awareness. This work represents the third strategic plan KDP has worked on with ONTABA.

It was a pleasure to work with the board of directors and executive at Re-Imagine Ontario to develop their new 2024-2027 Strategic Plan. With a new plan in hand, Re-Imagine Ontario (RO) will strive to improve the health, education and employment of black and vulnerable youth through community networks, development opportunities, and family supports.

The planning process included internal document review, environmental scan, delving into the current position and capacity of RO, and facilitating video conference planning sessions with governance volunteers. The project culminated in the preparation of draft plans for read out, final copy and graphic presentation of the plan.

The Board of Directors recognized the inflection point of the Latinx/Hispanic community and the need for a robust strategic plan for the Centre for Spanish Speaking Peoples (CSSP-CGHH) to reach across the Greater Toronto Area and achieve greater social impact. At KDP Consulting, we worked with the Board of Directors and Executive Leadership through in-depth internal and external organizational reviews, examined the needs and service gaps in the community, engaged volunteers and clients in feedback sessions, and consulted board and other stakeholders to inform a final presentation of a comprehensive strategic plan and development recommendations.

Operations

Keith served as Acting CEO for the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA in November and December 2024, guiding the Board of Directors through a critical transitional period. During his tenure, he conducted a comprehensive operational assessment, identified key challenges and opportunities, and presented strategic pathways for the organization’s future. Keith also developed a robust three-year business plan to support the YMCA’s re-development, ensuring long-term sustainability and growth.

Tonari Gumi (Japanese Community Volunteers Association) embarked on an ambitious plan to evolve from a small, primarily social and activity-based organization serving 500 seniors into a mid-sized social service agency capable of supporting 1,000 seniors with more complex needs. KDP conducted a comprehensive review of internal documents and historical data, leading to a bold, actionable roadmap for scaling the organization in a structured and sustainable way. This included redefining the agency’s leadership structure, developing new position descriptions, designing a competitive compensation model, and establishing core competencies for key roles.

Outside Looking In (OLI) engaged KDP Consulting Inc to conduct an assessment of the OLI dance program. The assessment examined the program’s impact on the youth participants particularly in the areas of: academic achievements, mental health, physical health, and social connection. Taking into account the increase in youth participation rates year-over-year, and the trajectory of growth is anticipated to continue, the assessment addressed the considerations for managing growth while not diminishing program delivery  and student experience.

The methodology included: document review and data analysis, consultations through sharing circles, one-on-one interviews (in-person and video conferencing), online surveys, and in-person program delivery reviews. The assessment applied appreciative inquiry interview techniques and various best practices appropriate for education-based programs, youth development, camp management, and nonprofit management. 

WoodGreen Community Services is one of the largest social service agencies in Toronto, delivering integrated programs from physical, mental health and disability services to affordable housing and pathways to employment. We are honoured to conducted an in-depth evaluative research to their WGCC Mentorship Program, including client and staff interviews, focus group interview, document reviews, and mentor and mentee digital satisfaction survey.
